Therapeutic Interactions: Considerations for Midline Managers

This training is brought to you through the IACP Technical Assistance Program and ITABS.  

The moment-to-moment therapeutic interactions that we have with the people we support have potential to influence their quality of life. Midline management often support the person by coaching direct support professionals on ways to interact with the person. 
This presentation will review several considerations regarding therapy services and strategies that could be used by midline managers while initially preparing direct support professionals to work with individuals and as also as challenges arise. 

1. Describe a method of explaining to direct support professionals why the people we support may engage in behaviors such as aggression to self/others/property. 
2. Name at least 3 “judgmental terms/phrases” and explain how using them may be detrimental to the person being supported and to the staff using the terms/phrases. 
3. Describe what “validation” is and how it can be used to both avoid and respond to challenging behaviors. 

Susan Smith is the Director of the “Iowa’s Technical Assistance and Behavior Supports program, which is also known as “I-TABS”. She earned an BA in Psychology and an MA in Counseling from Drake University and a Graduate Certificate in Behavior Analysis from the University of North Texas. Susan is an LMHC in Iowa and certified as a Master’s Level Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
