Individuals with intellectual disabilities are living longer and the risk of them experiencing dementias is increasing.  The special care needs of individuals experiencing dementias can challenge service provider.   Knowledge of the condition and related supports are essential in providing dementia-capable care. This webinar will 1) review a “staff-friend” screening tool intended to identify early signs of mild cognitive impairment or dementia in people who have an intellectual disability and/or developmental disability, 2) review a handful of ideas for supporting people with intellectual disabilities affected by dementia, and 3) identify additional resources specific to this topic.

Objectives:

  • Name and describe a screening tool designed for individuals with ID/D and dementia.
  • Describe person-centered approaches to supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities who are affected by dementia.
  • Name additional resources related to I/DD and dementia.

Biography 

Susan Smith is the Director of the “Iowa’s Technical Assistance and Behavior Supports program, which is also known as “I-TABS”.  She earned an BA in Psychology and an MA in Counseling from Drake University and a Graduate Certificate in Behavior Analysis from the University of North Texas.  Susan is an LMHC in Iowa and certified as a Master’s Level Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
